Amazon thinks ‘outside of the box’ with Minions

Thanks to a social media competition, running in the US, Amazon has hit upon one way of recouping packaging costs.
A piece in the Wall Street Journal reports that Amazon has struck a deal with Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment, which will see the online retailer’s packages transformed into yellow boxes decorated with characters from the movie Minions.

The promotion runs until 10 July and encourages customers to post photos of themselves on social media with one of the boxes to win a $1,000 Amazon gift card.

Cinemas and fast food outlets have long adopted tactics similar to this, which makes Amazon’s move all the more interesting as it could spark a number of copy-cat deals that turn dull, boring, packaging into prime advertising real estate.
