Budget investment into delivery congestion solutions welcomed by industry

Parcel broker Parcelhero has welcomed the £270 million investment into developing robotics and driverless vehicles, announced yesterday in Philip Hammond’s first budget.
David Jinks, head of consumer research at ParcelHero, said: “Britain is at the forefront of technology when it comes to logistics and courier services. Parcels are being delivered by drone in Cambridgeshire, droids are delivering packages in London streets and driverless vans are being trialled in Greenwich.”

He said the new investment would ensure the UK retains a market lead. “Britain and the US are streets ahead of the rest of the Western world when it comes to e-commerce and delivery innovation, and this money will help ensure we stay ahead of the curve,” he said.

The company also welcomed regional investment announced yesterday, including £93 million for northern roads, and more money for Midlands routes to tackle pinch points; as well as the £690 million competition for local authorities to tackle urban congestion. Jinks said this was a move that would benefit all retailers and their delivery partners. “Delivery delays cost this country £millions and something needs to be done to ensure Britain gets back on the move. This latest investment will help ensure our logistics services can keep delivering,” he said.
