Editorial: Why we can only get better if we share knowledge

DeliveryX

We know returns are a persistent headache – the experience for many retailers and their customers is still lacking even for those with the slickest of procedures in place. Making returns as a customer and dealing with those returns as a retailer simply isn’t a great experience.
But how do we make it better? Global returns specialist ReBound is hoping to do just that with a new free to access site that will aim to share latest trends and share best practise. Will it be enough to truly encourage those in the industry to open and share when it comes to innovation? It will certainly be interesting to see.

This week has also seen the announcement of a number of investments from different companies as they continue to expand to meet new customer needs. On the supplier side UK Mail is investing £1.3 million in a new parcel sorting system. The fully automated system will ramp up the company’s parcel sorting capability at its national UK hub near Coventry.

On the retailer side fashion retailer Boohoo is also investing in warehouse automation after revealing the latest news about planned warehouse extensions in its results this week. Construction is to begin this summer.

Amazon is also still expanding (naturally!) with a fourth new UK fulfilment centre announced this week which will also include the company’s Amazon Robotics technology.

Another company hungry for expansion is McDonald’s. Following the news that its fast food rival KFC is partnering for a home delivery service the burger giant also revealed this week that it is to start a home delivery trial this summer. Big Mac and fries on wheels anyone?

And finally this week is the news that DHL Supply Chain was named in the Times Top 50 Employers for Women. In fact the company was the only logistics firm to be named in the top 50 employers and proves a stark reminder that the industry should be doing more to attract and retain women within the profession. What’s your view on it all? Email liz@edelivery.net to share your views or comment on page as normal as we will be doing a follow-up piece next week hopefully!
