Editorial: Why convenient delivery has to be a top priority for 2018

DeliveryX

As the post-festive analysis continues new research published today suggests that on the whole retailers underpromised and over-delivered over the peak period. The conclusion comes from the latest shipping survey by Kurt Salmon. However it also reveals the price that retailers had to pay for such results – with the need to somewhat manipulate how deliveries were made in order to ensure success.

Amongst the carriers Yodel was celebrating Christmas delivery success this week claiming a rise in customer satisfaction despite a 11% increase in parcel deliveries overall.

Of course many of us turned to Amazon Prime for our Christmas shopping and the company was rated in the top 10 by Kurt Salmon in its study. Amazon’s figures suggest that the delivery service was used for 5 billion of goods in 2017 – an impressive figure.

The stories above show how important convenient delivery is to success and if you are still not convinced then that is the subject of our opinion piece this week – as Patrick Gallagher, chief executive of On the dot, shares his predictions for 2018 and explains what priorities for the year ahead should be.

Another interesting move forward in convenience for click and collect comes from Asda which has begun the trial of an automated parcel tower in its Trafford Park store to deal with collections and returns. The machines have been a huge success in its parent company Walmart’s stores in the US so it will be interesting to see how they fare here.

And finally we have news of CitySprint trialling a new hydrogen van for same day deliveries in London and news of a rebranding by P2P Mailing.
