Editorial: A focus on sustainability and expansion for the delivery industry

DeliveryX

Sustainability is a key target for those in the logistics and supply chain sector and this week’s round-up of news shows just how important it is.
Deutsche Post DHL Group has been a key innovator with its electric StreetScooter vans. The company announced this week that it is now rolling them out for third party availability as well as increased use within its own business. The company will see a doubling of production of the vehicles this year as a result.

At Magna Park in Milton Keynes a new sustainable warehouse is to be built by developer IDI Gazeley, with a focus on going above the norm to help companies to reduce their supply chain emissions.

Robotics is also in the news again this week after DHL Supply Chain revealed that it is to test a robotics solution as a picker companion for piece picking order fulfilment, working alongside warehouse staff and seeing how humans and robots work together. The pilot certainly promises some interesting answers.

Also on the learning path is wine app Vivino which is now launching ecommerce operations for the first time. The company has partnered with XPO Logistics who will manage the entire ecommerce supply chain.

On a larger scale, lifestyle brand Joules has also signed a new logistics contract to help support broader global expansion. The company is partnering with SEKO Logistics in a three-year deal to help deliver on its international ambitions.

Naturally when it comes to international expansion many worry about the implications of Brexit on trade and so in this week’s opinion piece we have David Jinks, head of consumer research at ParcelHero, who reveals ten ways that retailers can help beat the imposition of duties and VAT post-Brexit.

And finally, don’t forget we will be featuring some of the key highlights from eDelivery Expo (EDX) over the next few days so keep an eye on the site and look out for next week’s newsletter too.

If you’ve not signed up for the newsletter of course then now is the time to do so. You’ll get a weekly newsletter summarising the main stories we’ve covered, and we’ll keep you informed of other big announcements. You’ll find details on subscribing here.
