Editorial: How the industry is innovating to cut down impact of delivery and logistics operations

DeliveryX

Last week Deutsche Post DHL Group made a bold pledge with a 2050 target for net zero emissions for its logistics operations. It’s a big ask. The company outlined four key interim steps to hit by 2025 and has already beaten its original deadline of improving carbon efficiency by 30% on 2007 levels by four years.
Bike and electric vehicles will form part of the pledge and, as we have seen in recent weeks, both are proving popular options as companies look to improve efficiency of delivery and environmental impact.

Congestion was one of the areas that Philip Hammond addressed in his first budget last week with various measures announced to try to allow logistics services to keep on delivering for retailers in the UK and it’s a move that has been welcomed by the industry.

Dealing and managing delivery delays caused by congestion is also a target for wn Direct founder Stuart Hill who has taken on the role of CEO at Pie Mapping, a routing, linehaul optimisation and resource management system provider that was bought by DPD in late 2016. He outlines the company’s future plans this week.

APC Overnight is also innovating. The company has announced two new products for its SME customer base to improve their experience and that of their customers too.

We have said before about the opportunities around IoT and delivery and it’s a focus once again this week. The technology really does allow for some interesting things to become reality with the ability for pallets, packages and products to truly talk back. Is it an opportunity that’s being grasped quickly enough?

And talking of grabbing opportunities have you grabbed your chance to find out the latest innovations and thinking in the industry. eDelivery Expo takes place alongside InternetRetailing Expo IRX) April 5-6. To find out more about the show and register for free, visit www.edeliveryexpo.com.
