Editorial: Understanding the impact of Brexit on the logistics sector

DeliveryX

Whilst Brexit (in whatever form it may take) may be impacting many businesses most logistics companies still expect growth, according to a new report from the Freight Transport Association this week.
Many are still planning investment and have specific Brexit plans of some sort or another in place. However more than half said Brexit was the most cited external challenge to international growth.

Talking of growth both DHL and Hermes have announced their recent depot openings this week. DHL has opened a new 11-acre multi-purpose warehouse in Bristol to serve the south-west, whilst Hermes has launched a new hub in Hemel Hempstead to support customers in the south-east.

As well as news of Hermes’ expansion we also have an interview with Hermes’ director of hub and depot operations to find out more about the new operation as well as the company’s predictions and preparations for this year’s peak period.

We have the latest on delivery order volumes, the growth of which has slowed according to the latest figures from the IRMG MetaPack UK Delivery Index. We have more details of Ocado’s deal with US food retailer Kroger, which will see it develop and operate 20 customer fulfilment centres for the retailer over the next three years. And finally a new survey by Whistl that suggests that extended delivery times are putting up to a third of consumers off shopping abroad.
