Editor’s column: EDX drones, Tesco delivery woes, John Lewis C&C grows: all in eDelivery

DeliveryX

This time next week eDelivery Expo (EDX 2015) will be well and truly under way.
We’ll have had a demo of a drone delivery, courtesy of Scurri. And one lucky expo attendee will be gearing themselves up to show off about the Apple Watch they’ve won.

Over the two days, there will be speakers, seminars, case studies and networking opportunities galore. The eDelivery team will be there, along with our InternetRetailing colleagues, and we hope you’ll come and say hello.

If you’re still looking for a reason to come along, here’s a list of 10 great reasons to visit EDX put together by our fabulous marketing manager Lucia Ruiz Lopez.

Non-EDX related news this week includes the unveiling of a new returns portal from Royal Mail, which is the latest in a series of new service announcements in the last few months.

Some people dubbed 2014 the year of click and collect, and it’s not a claim you’d want to dismiss out of hand. John Lewis has announced that demand for click and collect now outstrips that for home delivery. Maybe 2015 will be the year of click and collect, too.

Meanwhile, Tesco’s plans for 24 deliveries to one of its stores in the town of Henley on Thames have been sunk, thanks to opposition from residents and officials alike. Planning permission is a constant bone of contention, it seems.

Change is one of life’s few constants. Changes in the way people want deliveries is likely to be a theme that stays with us for quite some time. One company offering its take on this thorny issue is Pelipod, who have a secure doorstep delivery box complete with built-in camera, to receive your parcels when you’re not at home.

Someone else giving thought to the topic of change, is Tobias Hartmann from eBay Enterprise, who has written a piece for us looking at how retail supply chains are evolving, and how you can stay relevant in an omnichannel world.

As I said at the start of this column, EDX 2015 kicks off next Wednesday. We’re hoping to catch up with as many of you as we can, so do try to come and meet some of the team. We’ll be out in force on both days, 25 & 26 March, and we’re a very approachable lot.

You’ll find more info on EDX 2015, including details of how to register, here.
