Majestic makes wine delivery greener with more EVs

Specialist wine retailer Majestic plans to switch to a fully electric fleet by 2030, and will roll out 35 electric vans in the coming months as part of its efforts to “slash carbon emissions”.

The move will more than double the 16 EVs it had originally planned to add to its fleet before the end of the financial year.

Each of Majestic’s 207 stores has its own dedicated delivery van, with 60% of all orders placed through its website now dispatched from its shop network.

The wine retailer estimated that the EV switch will cut more than 700,000 diesel-powered road miles every year, reducing its CO2 emissions by up to 170,000kg.

“Majestic’s fleet of vans is among the busiest in retail, so we are acutely conscious of their carbon footprint and the need to go greener,” said John Colley, Majestic CEO.

“As a business, we are determined to grow in an environmentally responsible manner and the transformation of our fleet to fully electric vehicles will slash our carbon emissions by more than 1.2 million kilogrammes every year.”

Earlier this year, Majestic teamed up with Uber Eats to offer its customers rapid delivery services in eight UK locations, with a full roll-out in October.

Another way Majestic has worked to grow its D2C business is through its successful subscription offering. In May, Matthew Gaunt, former customer director, Majestic Wine, told the packed auditorium at the SubX World conference how key its subscription service is.
