An Post and Swissport embrace IoT tracking sensors

DeliveryX

Two European shipping and logistics companies are embracing the internet of things (IoT) by adding new tracking technologies to their networks.
An Post, a major mail and parcel carrier in Ireland, is introducing tracking devices using the technology Sigfox across its network. Sigfox is a long-distance but low data technology which is designed for use in sensors that are widely dispersed and not regularly maintained.

VT-IoT, an Irish Sigfox operator, will provide An Post with sensors so that they can track transport units such as roll cages and containers. This will offer greater visibility over the company’s whole network.

Mark Devine, national engineering maintenance and performance manager, An Post, said: “VT’s state-of-the-art solution has resulted in significantly increased transparency in our postal distribution network, ensuring world class quality of service for our customers and lower operational costs through improved containerisation efficiency.”

Swissport is introducing sensors using the wireless standard Bluetooth, which has seen use in a wide range of consumer applications but is seeing wider adoption in industry. The technology is designed to communicate reasonably large amounts of data over relatively short distances.

Installed in partnership with Unilode and Descartes, the technology will provide real-time geolocation for unit load devices.

The technology will be rolled out to 115 cargo warehouses during the year.

Hendrik Leyssens, Swissport’s VP of global operations for cargo, said: “Our cooperation with Unilode and Descartes and the introduction of global ULD tracking at our cargo warehouses create added value for our customers and drive the digital transformation of the cargo supply chain and the industry.”
